PUTRAJAYA, July 28 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) has completed most of the infrastructure projects required to support the intake of six-year-old pupils entering Year One for the 2027 school session ahead of schedule.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the progress reflects the commitment of all parties involved in ensuring schools are fully prepared to accommodate the additional intake.
She said the ministry is also finalising teacher placements and other operational requirements based on projected enrolment figures to ensure a smooth implementation of the dual Year One intake next year.
According to the ministry, more than 73,000 applications have been received from six-year-old children for the 2027 school session, while over 405,000 seven-year-olds are expected to enter Year One.
Preparations include the construction of 2,596 new classrooms and the recruitment of 3,150 teachers on a Contract of Service (COS) basis.
Fadhlina said the ministry continues to receive registration applications and inquiries from parents, which she described as a sign of growing confidence in the policy and the ministry’s readiness to implement it.
Separately, the minister announced that 10 model schools will be selected in every district beginning next week to accelerate education reform efforts. The initiative will involve five primary schools and five secondary schools in each district, focusing on improving school culture, learning environments, educational quality and service delivery.
She stressed that meaningful education reform goes beyond physical upgrades and requires changes in mindset, work culture and the overall school ecosystem to create high-performing institutions.
