QuickCheck: Was AI used to portray an enforcement agency’s director-general to defraud TikTok users?

By The Star

In the age of digital information, distinguishing fact from fiction is crucial.

Recently, two viral TikTok videos have surfaced featuring a face and voice that resemble Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, the director-general of the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS). Was deepfake technology used to create the videos to trick the public?

Verdict:

TRUE

The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has denied the authenticity of two viral TikTok videos that appear to feature its director-general.

In a statement, the agency advised the public to be cautious about videos that use deepfake technology to imitate Mohd Shuhaily's identity for fraudulent purposes, including purportedly expressing support for certain forms of assistance, reported Bernama.

"The public is reminded not to be deceived or misled by content produced using artificial intelligence (AI), such as deepfakes, which are increasingly easy to manipulate for fraudulent activities.

"To obtain authentic information on any form of government assistance, the public is advised to refer only to official media channels and the websites of the relevant ministries, departments and agencies," the agency said.

The agency said it was taking the matter seriously and stressed that legal action would be taken against any party responsible for producing or disseminating the fake content.
