Mourners honour former PM Pak Lah

KUALA LUMPUR: More political leaders, relatives, and friends arrived early this morning to pay their final respects to former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at his residence.

Some were seen as early as 6.30am, while members of the press gathered outside to report on the event.


Abdullah, who was Malaysia's fifth prime minister, died at the age of 85 yesterday (April 14). His health had been on the decline in recent years.


Khairy Jamaluddin, the late prime minister's son-in-law, informed reporters that the remains of Abdullah will be brought to Masjid Negara at around 8.30am.


From 11am to 1pm, Abdullah's remains will be in the main prayer hall of Masjid Negara to allow members of the public to pay their final respects.


Abdullah, who succeeded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister on Oct 31, 2003, served until April 2, 2009.


He was the sixth president of Umno and was conferred the title "Tun" by then King Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin for his service to the nation.


Abdullah is survived by his wife, Tun Jeanne Abdullah, and two children β€” Kamaluddin and Nori.
